Highlands, NC is an incorporated town in Macon County. Located on a plateau in the southern Appalachian Mountains, within the Nantahala National Forest at 4818 ft elevation. The permanent population was 924 at the 2010 census. The population swells to 25,000-35,000 during the season from spring to fall.
Highlands is well know for it's resort feel. Fine dining, unique shops, and a plethora of Hiking trails, waterfalls, and pinnacle views. This town has become the second home to stars and is rated on Forbes top list for best resorts and spas (Atlanta Magazine) as well as travel destinations.
Highlands has a subtropical highland climate with much cooler weather than the rest of the American South. This cooling is caused by its altitude. The town's elevation contributes to its relatively cool summers and abundant rainfall, averaging 87 inches per year. Average snowfall is only 13 inches due to the fact that Highlands is further south and east in the Appalachian Mountains. Highlands is one of the very rare locations at this latitude that has an average high of 78°F or 26°C in July, far lower than the rest of the American South.
